Turkey restores access to Twitter
The country’s telecommunications authority said Thursday it was in the process of restoring access to Twitter.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had ordered the ban two weeks ago, after Twitter was used to circulate audio files implicating the prime minister and his son of corruption.
The ban came during the run-up to key local elections.
Public access to the video-sharing website YouTube, however, remains blocked in Turkey. Turkey’s government enforced that ban after the site circulated what is thought to be an audio recording of top Turkish officials discussing plans for possible military intervention in Syria’s civil war.
The Twitter and YouTube bans both drew international condemnation.
The purported audio recording prompted Mr. Erdogan to describe the leaks as “villainous.” He called them an attempt to discredit him and his Justice and Development party ahead of the local elections, which took place on Sunday .
Mr. Erdogan claimed victory for his party in the elections, which were seen as a referendum on his rule.
