What’s on: Sofia Independent Film Festival

While the latest Hollywood big-budget productions are routinely given their screen time in Bulgaria, the opportunities to see films from the international festival circuit on the big screen in Sofia are significantly fewer.

It is the stated goal of the Sofia Independent Film Festival to provide that opportunity for cinema aficionados in Bulgaria. Now in its fourth year, this year’s edition starts on October 24 with a screening of Alexander Payne’s Nebraska – one of the nominees for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes festival, where Bruce Dern also won the best actor award.

A total of 33 films will be shown over 10 days in five venues across the city; the festival also features combined presentations of the live action and animation films nominated for the 2013 Academy Awards. For a full programme of the festival or to purchase tickets, visit the Sofia Independent Film Festival website.
