Spain arrests 22 on Bulgarian ship trafficking close to 3 tons of cocaine

Twenty-two Bulgarians are in custody in Cadiz after Spanish authorities arrested Bourgas-registered vessel Saint Nikolai on the high seas in an operation in which close to three tons of cocaine was seized.

Spanish authorities have not disclosed the names of those arrested. Checks were being carried out into whether those detained had police records in Bulgaria, authorities said.

After interrogation of those arrested is completed, the case will be forwarded to the supreme court in Madrid.

Bulgarian-language news website Mediapool quoted Doychin Doychev, manager of the Seaborne company that owns the vessel, as saying that he had no information about the case and that contact with the ship had been lost some days ago.
