Bulgaria’s new motorway speed limit of 140km/h takes effect

As of June 26 2012, the maximum speed limit on Bulgaria’s motorways is increased to 140km/h.

The change follows amendments to the Road Traffic Act, which allows the new speed limit on motorways where surfaces are in suitable condition.

On older major roads, the 90km/h limit remains in force.

The amendments to the law introduce the term “speedway”, a category of road yet to built and which will be cheaper than building highways. Speedways will not have emergency lanes. The speed limit there will be 120km/h.
