Romania threatens to make Hungarian House Speaker persona non grata
Parliament Speaker László Kövér left for Romania on Tuesday to campaign for an ethnic Hungarian party despite already soured relations with the Romanian government in recent weeks over the reburial of a controversial ethnic Hungarian writer.
Speaking on the margins of a meeting on European Union cohesion policy in Bucharest on Saturday, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta called for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to distance himself from Kövér after the latter harshly criticised Romanian authorities’ refusal to permit the reburial of the ashes of writer József Nyírõ in his native Odorheiu Secuiesc.
