Road death toll in Bulgaria in first nine months of 2018 was 456 – Interior Ministry
A total of 456 people died in accidents on Bulgaria’s roads in the first nine months of 2018, according to Interior Ministry figures released on October 1.
The death toll is 24 fewer than in the first nine months of 2017, the ministry said.
Between January 1 and September 30, there were 5028 accidents on Bulgaria’s roads. Apart from the dead, a total of 6423 people were injured.
In September 2018 alone, there were 576 accidents, with 55 people dead and 729 injured.
In 2017, Bulgaria had the second-highest road fatality rate in the European Union, after Romania.
Principal causes of road deaths in Bulgaria are speeding, overtaking where unsafe to do so, and drink-driving.
In the peak months of Bulgaria’s summer holiday season, police staged a high-profile enforcement campaign on major roads and motorways between the interior and the seaside, handing out large numbers of penalties for, among other things, drink-driving, speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt and driving without a licence.
