Bulgaria’s road death toll in first three months of 2026 is 86

A total of 86 people died in road accidents in Bulgaria in the first three months of 2026, according to provisional data published on March 1 by the Interior Ministry.

This is two more road deaths than the confirmed figure for the first three months of 2025, the Interior Ministry said.

There were a total of 1231 road accidents from January 1 to March 31 2026. Apart from the dead, 1538 people were seriously injured.

In March 2026 alone, there were 424 road accidents in which people died or were seriously injured. The month’s road death toll was 27 with 529 seriously injured.

As The Sofia Globe reported previously, Bulgaria is among five European Union countries on track to meet the target of reducing the annual number of deaths in road accidents by 50 per cent by 2030, but in 2025 had the highest road death rate in the EU, according to preliminary data posted by the European Commission (EC) on March 24.
