EC advances two infringement cases against Bulgaria
The European Commission said on March 11 that it advanced two infringement cases against Bulgaria for failing to implement EU rules into national law. In its latest infringements package, the EC said that it sent reasoned opinions in two existing cases, the second stage of the infringement process.
One of the reasoned opinions concerned the ongoing case regarding Bulgaria’s failure to fully transpose the Directive on information exchange between law enforcement authorities (Directive (EU) 2023/977), which aims to strengthen the prevention, detection and investigation of criminal offences in the EU .
The other reasoned opinion was due to Bulgaria failing to notify the Commission of any national measures to transpose the Directive criminalising the violation of Union restrictive measures (Directive (EU) 2024/1226), which seeks to prevent the circumvention of EU sanctions, including those adopted following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Bulgaria now has two months to respond and take the necessary measures. Otherwise, the Commission may decide to refer the cases to the Court of Justice of the European Union with requests to impose financial sanctions.
