Bulgaria’s retail trade volume in January 2026 up 3.9% y/y

The total retail trade volume in Bulgaria in January 2026 – the month that the country adopted the euro as its currency – was 3.9 per cent higher than in January 2025, according to figures posted on March 5 by European Union statistics office Eurostat.

In December 2025, the increase on an annual basis was 8.2 per cent, after rising 3.8 per cent in November 2025 compared with November 2024.

On a monthly basis, retail trade volume in Bulgaria increased by 0.5 per cent in January compared with December, while in December it has risen by 1.6 per cent compared with November.

In January 2026, compared with December 2025, the seasonally adjusted retail trade volume decreased by 0.1 per cent in the euro area and increased by 0.1 per cent in the EU, Eurostat said.

In December 2025, retail trade volume grew by 0.2 per cent in the euro area and remained stable in the EU.

Among EU member states for which data are available, the highest annual increases in the total retail trade volume were recorded in Luxembourg (+24.7 per cent), Lithuania (+9.3 per cent) and Estonia (+8.7 per cent). Decreases were observed in Slovakia (-3.1 per cent) and Slovenia (-1.5 per cent).

Among member states for which data are available, the highest monthly increases in the total retail trade volume were recorded in Estonia (+4.4 per cent), Latvia (+2.8 per cent) and Portugal (+2.0 per cent). The largest decreases were observed in Slovakia (-3.5 per cent), Slovenia (-1.9 per cent) and Croatia (-1.3 per cent).
