EU member states agree to derogation for Ukraine to buy crucial products for Patriot air defence
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on September 8 that together with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, she welcomes the agreement by EU member states on the derogation for Ukraine to purchase crucial products for Patriot air defence systems.
The next disbursement of 3.2 billion euro will enable Ukraine to better protect its skies from Russia’s indiscriminate attacks, Von der Leyen said.
This comes on top of 8.4 billion euro already disbursed under the Ukraine Support Loan, including for air defence, she said.
“We will continue to work hand in hand to support Ukraine and to strengthen Europe’s defence posture,” Von der Leyen said.
Rutte said on X on September 8 that the next disbursement of $3.5 billion will enable Ukraine to better protect its skies from Russia’s indiscriminate attacks.
“Over the past year, Nato Allies have allocated over $10 billion to PURL and US Foreign Military Sales for Ukraine,” Rutte said.
He said that Nato and the EU would continue to work hand in hand to support Ukraine. “It is yet another example of Europe stepping up,” he said.
PURL, the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List, is a procurement mechanism for providing Ukraine with military equipment from US stockpiles for the current Russo-Ukraine war, and more generally, funding.
The programme was established in fiscal year 2022 under the aegis of the US Department of Defence and Nato.
