There were 3218 new passenger car registrations in Bulgaria in January 2026, an decrease of 19.4 per cent compared with January 2025, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, ACEA, said on February 24.
Of the new passenger car registrations in Bulgaria in January 2026, a total of 2378 were petrol cars, 403 diesel, 182 battery-electric, 204 hybrid-electric, 45 plug-in hybrid and six “other”, a category that includes fuel-cell electric vehicles, natural gas vehicles, LPG, E85/ethanol, and other fuels.
ACEA said that in January 2026, new EU car registrations fell by 3.9 per cent compared to January last year, marking a second consecutive challenging start to the year for the market. The batteryelectric car market share reached 19.3 per cent, highlighting the continued potential for further growth. Hybrid-electric vehicles lead as the most popular power type choice among buyers, with plug-in hybrids consolidating their position in the market, underlining the importance of a technology-neutral pathway to decarbonisation.
Battery-electric cars accounted for 19.3 per cent of the EU market share in January 2026, an increase from the low baseline of 14.9 per cent one year earlier. Hybrid-electric car registrations captured 38.6 per cent of the market, remaining the preferred choice among consumers in the EU. Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 30.1 per cent, down from 39.5 per cent in January 2025.
