Bulgaria issues weather warnings for February 21 over forecast heavy snowfalls
Bulgaria’s national meteorological bureau has issued the Code Orange warning of dangerous weather for several districts, and the lesser Code Yellow warning of a number of others, for February 21 because of forecast heavy snowfalls.
The Road Infrastructure Agency urged motorists who intend travelling on February 20 and during the weekend to ensure that their cars are prepared for winter conditions.
The Code Orange warning applies to the districts of Plovdiv, Smolyan, Kurdzhali, Haskovo, Stara Zagora, Yambol, Sliven, Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo.
The Code Yellow warning of potentially dangerous weather applies to the districts of Pazardzhik, Lovech, Pleven, Bourgas, Varna, Dobrich, Shoumen, Turgovishte, Rousse and Silistra.
The meteorological bureau said that the weather on February 21 would be windy, and blizzards and snowdrifts are possible.
In southern Bulgaria, morning temperatures will be between 3° and 7° Celsius, but will decrease during the day and by 2pm will be between 0° and 4°. In Sofia, the temperature will be around zero.
In the mountains it will be cloudy with snowfalls, significant in quantity in the Rhodope Mountains and the Central Stara Planina. Maximum temperature at an altitude of 1200 metres will be about 0°, at 2000 metres, about minus 5°.
It will be cloudy along the Black Sea coast with rain showers, which will mix with snow towards the end of the day. In places, mainly along the northern coast, icing is possible. Maximum temperatures will be between 4° and 7°.
