Tourism Minister: Euro accession will strengthen Bulgaria’s position in European tourism market

Bulgaria’s accession to the euro zone is a strategic opportunity for growth and economic stability and will strengthen the country’s positions in the European tourism market, Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh told a conference on March 25.

Currently, if the relevant European institutions agree in a succession of decisions this year, Bulgaria may join the euro zone at the beginning of 2026.

Speaking at a conference organised by the National Tourism Board on “Bulgarian Tourism and Bulgaria’s Accession to the euro zone”, Borshosh emphasised the key role of tourism for the Bulgarian economy and outlined the benefits that the introduction of the euro will bring to the sector.

He said that the tourism sector is ready for Bulgaria’s entry into the euro zone, but the consumer should be better informed.

Borshosh said that we live in a world of populism, Bulgaria’s entry into the euro zone is often attacked and added: “We must admit that Bulgaria is lagging behind in its information campaign regarding its entry into the euro zone. Months and years have been lost”.

“The euro zone, apart from something that will really affect everyone, not just tourism, can be described in strong words as a dream, an absolute necessity, a new stage in the development of our country,” he said.

The introduction of the euro will facilitate the travel of tourists from the euro zone, who in 2024 will represent nearly 30 per cent of all foreign tourists visiting Bulgaria, he said.

The single currency will eliminate the need for currency exchange and will ensure greater price transparency, thus making Bulgaria an even more attractive destination, Borshosh said.

He highlighted the potential for attracting new investments in the tourism infrastructure, as well as the possibility of long-term growth of the sector.

Bulgaria’s membership of the euro zone is not only an economic advantage, but also a sign of trust – in Bulgaria as a stable, secure and modern destination, he said.
