Bulgarian railways offering retro train trips on March 1
Bulgarian state railways BDZ, in partnership with the Bulgarian Academy of Science’s National Ethnographic Museum, is offering trips on a retro train between Sofia and Bankya on the occasion of March 1, Baba Marta Day and the coming spring.
The multiple unit train No. 19 001.7 was produced in Austria in 1960, with technical specifications and furnishings that were very modern for its time.
Until 1994, it was used for trips by government officials.
Bulgarians traditionally celebrate Baba Marta Day on March 1, exchanging red and white adornments known as martenitsi, which are worn as talismans for good health.
On March 1, the retro train will make two return trips from Sofia to Bankya.
The first will start at 9.50am from Sofia Central Railway Station, arriving in Bankya at 10.14am.
Departure from Bankya will be at 11.40am and arrival in Sofia is scheduled for 12.04pm.
The second trip will start from Sofia at 12.50pm, with arrival in Bankya scheduled for 1.14pm. The return journey will start at 3pm, with arrival in Sofia at 3.24pm.
BDZ said that in Bankya, passengers would be able to visit the restored Central Mineral Bath.
The price of a round-trip ticket for adults is 44 leva and includes a reserved seat. For children up to 10 years of age, the ticket price is 22 leva. Tickets for can only be purchased at the ticket offices at railway stations and ticket offices.
