Bulgaria’s caretaker government to ask Parliament to approve Javelins contract
Bulgaria’s caretaker government approved at a meeting on January 15 an international contract to acquire Javelin missiles under the US foreign military sales programme and will ask the National Assembly to ratify it, the government information service said.
The acquisition is linked to that of the Stryker combat vehicles that Bulgaria is buying from the US.
In September 2024, the US State Department approved the possible sale to Bulgaria of Javelin FGM-148F missiles and related equipment, at an estimated cost of $114 million (about 217 million leva).
Bulgaria had asked to buy 218 Javelin FGM-148F missiles, 107 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units, and various other equipment, including materials for training.
The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency said at the time: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a Nato Ally that is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe”.
The proposed sale will improve Bulgaria’s long-term defence capacity to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to meet its national defence requirements, the agency said.
The prime contractors will be the Javelin Joint Venture between Lockheed Martin, located in Orlando, Florida; and RTX Corporation, located in Tucson, Arizona.
