Bulgaria’s caretaker government extends humanitarian aid system for those who fled Ukraine

At a regular meeting on December 23, Bulgaria’s caretaker government agreed to the latest extension of the humanitarian assistance programme for people displaced from Ukraine and granted temporary protection in Bulgaria, the government information service said.

The system, which involves state assistance for accommodation, was first put in place by the Kiril Petkov government soon after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

According to the government information service, since the system was inaugurated, it has been extended 13 times, not counting the December 23 decision.

The latest extension is until March 4 2025. The scheme had been due to expire on December 31 2024.

The most recent data on the government’s official site on Ukrainians in Bulgaria shows that since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a total of 3 398 551 Ukrainians have entered Bulgaria, of whom 60 864 remain in this country.

A total of 197 580 have been granted temporary protection, and 5961 are accommodated through the state support scheme.
