Bulgaria had second-largest drop in EU in greenhouse gas emissions in Q2 2024 y/y
Greenhouse gas emissions in Bulgaria dropped by 6.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2024 on an annual basis, the second-largest drop in the European Union, EU statistics agency Eurostat said on November 15, adding that Bulgaria was one of 14 EU countries to have decreased emissions while growing their GDP.
In 2023, Bulgaria had the largest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the EU in the first quarter of the year, the largest in the second quarter, and the second-largest in the third and fourth quarters.
In the first quarter of 2024, Bulgaria’s greenhouse gas emissions were 15.2 per cent lower than in the first quarter of 2023.
The largest reductions in greenhouse gases in the second quarter of 2024 were estimated for the Netherlands (-9.1 per cent), Bulgaria (-6.3 per cent), Austria and Hungary (each -5.9 per cent).
Out of the 19 EU countries that were estimated to have decreased their emissions, five recorded a decline in their GDP (Ireland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Austria).
In the second quarter of 2024, the EU economy greenhouse gas emissions were estimated at 790 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq), a 2.6 per cent decrease compared with the same quarter of 2023 (812 million tonnes of CO2-eq).
The EU’s gross domestic product (GDP) registered a one per cent increase in the second quarter of 2024, compared with the same quarter of 2023, Eurostat said.
