Bulgarian-Romanian mine countermeasure exercise Poseidon 2024 underway
The joint Bulgarian-Romanian mine countermeasure exercise Poseidon 2024 is being held from November 3 to 9 at the Bourgas naval base and Bulgaria’s territorial waters, Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry said.
The exercise involves ships and personnel from the navies of Bulgaria, Romania, Belgium, Greece, Italy, France, the United States, Latvia, Türkiye and the Nato Naval Command and the Mine Countermeasures Naval Group in the Black Sea (MCM BLACK SEA).
The goal of Poseidon 2024 is to improve the level of personnel training in planning and conducting mine countermeasures, surveying in shallow water areas and destruction of unexploded ordnance in a coalition format. Fleet Admiral Velko Velkov, Commander of the Flotilla of Combat and Auxiliary Ships, said.
The commander of the Anti-mine naval group, Captain Yusuf Karagüle, said that participation in the Bulgarian-Romanian exercise will improve the operational and tactical compatibility of the participating anti-mine ships and will contribute to the safety of shipping in the western reaches of the Black Sea.
The Poseidon 2024 exercise has been held annually since 2002, with the navies of Bulgaria and Romania hosting it on a rotating basis.
