European Commission approves 330M leva in state aid for Bulgarian farmers

The European Commission said on October 17 that it has approved 330 million leva, or about 168.9 million euro, in state aid for Bulgarian farmers in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In a statement, the Commission said that the state aid aims to alleviate the risk of losing financial liquidity due to the difficulties in the agricultural market provoked by Russia’s invasion.

The two separate state aid mechanisms approved by the Commission are targeted at producers of grain and oilseed crops (164 million leva) and agricultural producers active in the sectors of large and small ruminants, bee colonies, fruit and vegetables, oilseed rose, vineyards and tobacco (166 million leva).

The state aid will be disbursed to the companies in the form of direct grants, with the aid amount capped at 280 000 euro per beneficiary, and contingent on the funding being granted no later than December 31, the EC said.
