Bulgarian President names Glavchev as caretaker PM-designate
Bulgarian President Roumen Radev has appointed incumbent caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev as caretaker Prime Minister-designate, according to an announcement on the presidency’s website on August 22.
This follows Radev’s talks on August 21 with holders of posts listed in the constitution as eligible to be appointed as caretaker Prime Minister.
In those talks, only Glavchev and central Bulgarian National Bank deputy governor Petar Chobanov indicated willingness to be appointed to head the next interim administration.
The announcement said that Radev would receive Glavchev at noon on August 22 to instruct him to propose the line-up of a caretaker cabinet.
The development follows Radev’s refusal to decree the caretaker cabinet proposed by former caretaker Prime Minister-designate Goritsa Grancharova-Kozhareva because of the inclusion of controversial figure Kalin Stoyanov as caretaker Interior Minister, a post that Stoyanov holds in Glavchev’s current caretaker government.
Like the We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria coalition and the Vuzrazhdane party, Radev has no confidence in Stoyanov’s ability to play the appropriate role in ensuring the integrity of forthcoming early parliamentary elections.
Boiko Borissov’s GERB-UDF also has withdrawn its long-standing confidence in Stoyanov, though he retains the backing of Movement for Rights and Freedoms co-leader Delyan Peevski.
