Bulgarian Parliament amends Labour Code to enhance rights of fathers
Bulgaria’s Parliament unanimously approved on July 25 amendments to the Labour Code, which allow the use of leave by fathers, including if they are adoptive parents, for children up to the age of two, if the mother is deprived of parental rights or the exercise of such rights is vested in the father.
Parliament held the first and second readings at one sitting and the vote was 159 in favour with none against and no abstentions.
The amendments were tabled by GERB-UDF, which said in an explanatory memorandum that the goal is to achieve better protection of children, since until now fathers exercised their rights in certain cases only after the consent of the mother.
The amendments provide that the father can use the right to leave in case of death or serious illness of the mother. It remains possible, with the consent of the father, to transfer the leave, when he is employed, to one of his parents or to one of the mother’s parents.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the National Social Security Institute expressed support for the amendments.
