NSI poll: Business sentiment in Bulgaria largely unchanged in March

A regular monthly poll by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) has found that business sentiment in Bulgaria in March was largely unchanged compared with February.

The previous poll found that in February, business sentiment improved, after having been unchanged in January compared with December.

In December, business sentiment improved, rising for a second consecutive month.

The NSI said that in March 2023, there were downturns in the indicators in Bulgaria’s industry, retail trade and service sectors, while the indicator in the construction sector increased.

In the industry sector, the indicator went down by 0.8 percentage points, a result of managers having worsened expectations about the coming six months.

The retail trade indicator dropped by 1.3 percentage points, with retailers views of the business situation shifting from “good” towards “satisfactory”. The NSI said that this was normal for the season.

The service sector indicator was down by 1.2 percentage points, with managers having more unfavourable assessments about the business situation of their enterprises.

The construction sector indicator was up by four percentage points, with the poll having found an increase in the inflow of new orders over the past months, while forecasts about the next three months remained optimistic.
