EU to give free Interrail train passes to 30 000 teens
The European Commission has set aside a sum of cash to provide young Europeans turning 18 this year with a free Interrail pass. The special ticket allows the user to travel across Europe on almost any train.
European trains may have more teenage travellers than usual this summer, if all goes according to the plan laid out by the European Commission in its 2018 budget on March 1.
The EU’s executive branch has earmarked 12 million euro ($14.7 million) to provide between 20 000 to 30 000 young Europeans turning 18 this year with a free Interrail pass, which allows the user to travel across Europe on almost any train.
The measure is a “preparatory action” related to a proposal put forth by the European Parliament that calls for every European to get a free Interrail pass on his or her 18th birthday.
