Flu epidemic declared in Bulgaria’s Varna
An influenza epidemic has been declared in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna, and schools will be closed from January 27 until February 3, the regional health directorate in the city said on January 26.
Scheduled surgical operations, visits to hospitals and routine consultations for pregnant women have been suspended.
The proportion of people with flu in Varna is 236 out of 10 000, higher than the national average, regional health authorities said.
Ahead of the flu epidemic declaration in Varna, Bulgaria’s Ministry of Education said on January 26 that classes currently were suspended at 122 schools, including eight schools in Bourgas, where a flu outbreak led to schools throughout the city being closed last week.
