Deputy Speaker of Bulgaria’s Parliament dies

Rositsa Yanakieva, one of the deputy speakers of Bulgaria’s Parliament, has died at the age of 60.

Yanakieva was a member of Georgi Purvanov’s socialist breakaway party ABC and a former mayor of the industrial town of Pernik.

She was admitted to the Military Medical Academy in Sofia on January 6 with a severe cerebral hemorrhage. Yanakieva died in the early hours of January 26.

Born in Pernik in 1954, she was twice mayor of the town. A member of the 40th National Assembly for the Bulgarian Socialist Party, she was expelled from the party in early 2014 along with seven other members who joined Purvanov’s party.

As a recognised parliamentary group, one of eight in the 43rd National Assembly elected in October 2014, ABC will be entitled to choose a successor to Yanakieva as deputy speaker.
