Drunken youths assault couple in racist attack in Bulgarian capital
A group of drunken youths attacked a Bulgarian and her Ghanaian boyfriend while they were at a bus stop in the Borovo area of Sofia, reports on November 3 said.
The racist attack came a few weeks after reports of an October 14 incident in which a pregnant Bulgarian woman was beaten along with her Moroccan husband in the centre of Sofia.
According to a report by Nova Televizia, while the couple were at the bus stop, along with their child, the group of youths began hurling epithets at her boyfriend such as “dirty ape”.
The woman was assaulted, and was left with a broken tooth after being struck in the mouth. The group also assaulted her boyfriend.
The Ghanaian man said that it was clearly a racist assault. “I have been to different places in Bulgaria, I have been living here for a year, but this is the first time something like this has happened to me.”
The Bulgarian woman said that police arrived at the scene an hour after the incident was reported and did nothing to find the assailants. She alleged that police had failed to question eyewitnesses.
However, Nova Televizia said, the Sixth Regional Police Directorate said that the perpetrators had been arrested and pre-trial proceedings initiated.
