Bulgaria detains 107 in nationwide operation against illegal migrants

Bulgaria has detained 107 people found without identification during a nationwide police operation against illegal migrants, the Interior Ministry said on October 24 2014.

The operation, ordered by Prosecutor-General Sotir Tsatsarov and caretaker Interior Minister Yordan Bakalov, began early in the morning.

It was being conducted by Sofia and regional police directorates, prosecutors, the Interior Ministry’s Migration Directorate and special forces, the ministry statement said.

All places suspected of hosting people illegally resident in the country were being checked, including hostels, hotels and residential addresses.

Arrangements had been made in cases where foreigners were arrested for there to be assistance from the State Agency for Refugees, the Interior Ministry said.

By the late morning, 531 people had been checked on 107 arrested while a nationwide search order was out for three Bulgarian citizens.
