2014 Italian Festival in Bulgaria to showcase culture, design, food and wine

Italy’s culture, goods and foods will be showcased during the Italian Festival, organised by the Italian embassy to Bulgaria and the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), from June 1 to 30, with events scheduled for Sofia and other places in Bulgaria.

The programme includes:

June 1, 7pm: A performance of Metamorphosis, from the Franz Kafka novel, by the Chita di Elba theatrical troupe from the town of Forli, directed by Claudio Angelini. At the Sfumato Theatre, 2 D Grekov Street, Sofia. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 4, 7pm: Metamorphosis, at the Varna State Puppet Theatre.

June 5, 3pm to 8pm: Italian Wine and Food Tasting, Kempinski Zografski Hotel, Sofia.

June 5, 6.30pm: Screening of the documentary Neorealism 1943 – 1954 (Part 1 – to 1945), Dom na Kinoto, 37 Exarch Yosif Street, Sofia. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 5 to 6: Conference and bilateral meetings, “Bulgaria and Italy: Let’s Build Together”.
Visit by an Italian business delegation of 30 companies in the fields of construction, infrastructure, environment and energy. The forum aims to provide information on infrastructure projects in Bulgaria and establish co-operation between Italian and Bulgarian companies in joint work on tenders, agreements and sub-contracting. At the Sheraton Sofia Hotel Balkan. Organised by ICE, in co-operation with the Italian Association of Builders, Confindustria Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Construction Chamber, under the patronage of the Italian embassy in Bulgaria.

June 9, from 7pm: Opening of photo exhibition entitled Fragments and Presences, by the young Italian artist Francesco Artibani, continuing until June 23, part of the Month of Photography (June 3 to July 15). At the Photosynthesis Photographic Centre, 57 Vassil Levski Boulevard, Sofia. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 10, at 7pm. Performance by the Campidano folk song and dance group, from Sardinia. At the summer bandstand, Borissova Gradina, Sofia. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 11, from 8pm: The Burning Mountain, a presentation of the Italian edition of the poems of poet and translator Gustav Heinse, who was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and who lived and worked in Bulgaria from the 1920s until his death in 1971. The Burning Mountain is a diary in verse, reflecting the feelings of the author from his experiences on the front line during World War 1. At the Austrian library, Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski. The event will be addressed by Professor Paola Maria Philippi of the University of Bologna, editor of the edition.

June 12, 7pm. Canti D’incanto, popular tunes from Sardinia. Sofia Live Club, 1 Bulgaria Square, National Palace of Culture.

June 14 to 18: Italian participation in the New European Cinema at the International Festival of Cinema in Stara Zagora, with the presentation of two Italian films : I’ll Be Back, (comedy 2013), directed by Sergio Rubini and The Landlords, (drama , 2012) , directed by Edoardo Gabrielini.
Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 16 to 30: “Taste of 2019…”. At restaurants certified with the “Italian hospitality – Italian restaurants in the world” seal. The initiative is in support of the candidature of Sofia and the south-western region for European Capital of Culture 2019, in co-operation with the Italian cities of Cagliari, Lecce, Matera, Perugia , Ravenna and Siena. The aim is to present the artistic and cultural heritage of these cities through their traditional cuisine. Each of the six nights is devoted to a single city and each menu presented will be available to customers over the next five nights. At various restaurants in Sofia.

June 18 to 20
Seminar on the topic of restoration of historic surfaces: frescoes , mosaics and stone artifacts.
The event will feature experts from Florence and Ravenna and will be attended by seven Italian companies involved in restoration. At the Photo-Reporters’ Club, underpass between the Council of Ministers and Presidency buildings. Organiser: ICE Sofia in co-operation with Assorestauro Milan, Museum of History of Sofia and the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 19, 6.30pm: Screening of the documentary, Neorealism 1943-1954 (Part 2 – to 1950). Dom na Kinoto, 37 Exarch Yosif Street, Sofia. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.

June 21, 6pm: “Svicolando”, exhibition of the work of designer Vico Magistretti, as part of One Design Week, June 20 to 29 2014. City Art Gallery, 15 Knyaz Alexander I Street, Plovdiv.

June 26, 6.30pm: Screening of documentary Neorealism 1943-1954 (Part 3 – to 1954). Dom na Kinoto, 37 Exarch Yosif Street, Sofia.
