Anniversary of prevention of deportation of Bulgarian Jews to Nazi death camps commemorated
Bulgaria held its annual commemoration of the 1943 resistance by civil society, religious leaders and some politicians to the deportation of Bulgarian Jews to the Nazi death camps of the Holocaust.
The 71st anniversary was marked on March 10 by a ceremony at a commemorative plaque outside the National Assembly.
The ceremony commemorated not only the prevention of the deportation of Bulgarian Jews, but also the 11 343 Jews who were sent to Holocaust death camps from territories that had been put under Bulgarian administrations by the Hitler regime.
Those in attendance included representatives of Parliament, the government and the President, the Sofia mayor, the embassies of Israel, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Hungary, the Shalom Organisation of the Jews in Bulgaria and other NGOs.
