French ambassador: Bulgaria’s position on Ukraine is clear

France’s ambassador in Sofia, Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes, said on March 6 that Bulgaria had clearly expressed its position on Ukraine through the visit to Kyiv by foreign minister Kristian Vigenin being a clear sign that Bulgaria supported the democratic government there.

Speaking in an interview with public broadcaster Bulgarian National Television, the French ambassador predicted that the European Union would sign an agreement with the new Ukrainian cabinet.

He said that Russia could stop gas supplies to Ukraine or to other countries, but this was their market and if they did not sell, they would make no money. This instrument was not one that could be used easily, and if used, could not be for long.

He was asked to comment on the case against Volen Siderov following incidents on a flight from Sofia to Varna and at Varna Airport, in which the far-right ultra-nationalist Ataka leader was involved in an altercation with, among others, a French diplomat.

Siderov has renounced the immunity from prosecution that he has as a member of Parliament and the case is currently with prosecutors.

Asked what he expected of the investigation, the French ambassador replied, “I expect Bulgarians not to vote for Siderov”.
