‘American Hustle’, ‘Gravity’ lead 2014 Oscar nominations
A number of films based on real-life events are among contenders for this year’s Academy Awards.
The films American Hustle and Gravity received 10 nominations each, followed by 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Philomena.
The nominations for the annual Oscar awards were announced Thursday in Hollywood by the the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Nominees for best actor include Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, and Christian Bale for American Hustle.Among those nominated for best actress are Judi Dench for Philomena, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, and Meryl Streep for her role in August: Osage County.Two actors with African connections were nominated in the best supporting role categories; Kenyan Lupita Nyong’o, for her role in 12 Years a Slave and Somali-born Barkhad Abdi for his role as a pirate in Captain Phillips.
