‘Great possibility’ that Bulgaria will get EC funding to assist in refugee crisis

There is a great possibility that Bulgaria will get funding from the European Commission to assist the country in dealing with the situation created by the large increase in the number of Syrian refugees arriving.

This is according to Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev, who said that Bulgaria had been raising the issue at a political level and had a “concrete result” in the acknowledgment of an emergency situation in Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus.

There were two funds, the European Refugee fund and the External Borders fund, that could be used to provide support in the current period, he said.

Bulgaria already had completed the application form describing its needs. An expert committee from the EC was expected to arrive on October 1 to inspect Bulgaria’s needs.

Yovchev said that more money was expected to be in these funds in the next EU financial framework, while EU member states would be able to apply under the Police Cooperation fund as well.
