Bulgarian journalist’s car burnt out

The private car of Bulgarian journalist Genka Shikerova, co-presenter of a morning talk show on local television station bTV, was burnt out outside her home in Sofia on the night of September 16 2013.

BTV quoted Shikerova as saying that the cause was arson.

The car burst into flame abruptly at about 8.30pm. Attempts by neighbours to extinguish the blaze failed.

Shikerova recently took over as co-presenter of the breakfast television show. Local media reports said that she and her co-host had been asking awkward questions of a number of politicians, including Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergei Stanishev and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Lyutvi Mestan and had likened GERB leader Boiko Borissov to Hitler, in the sense that they were both known for building highways.

It has been several months since there was a rash of arson attacks on cars in Sofia and other places in Bulgaria. As to incidents involving the media, in October 2011, the private car of television journalist Sasho Dikov was blown up outside his Sofia home.
