Poland’s PKP unveils new high-speed train
Train operator PKP Intercity unveiled on August 12 its first new, high-speed Pendolino train, which the company hopes will breathe fresh life into Poland’s creaking railway system and help it regain passengers’ confidence.
Thousands of curious visitors flocked to see the unveiling of the new train in the southwestern city of Wroclaw. PKP Intercity plans to begin using 20 such Italian-made trains by May 2014 following safety tests.
The train will travel between the cities of Warsaw, Wroclaw, Rzeszow, Gdansk, and Cracow, reaching speeds of over 200 kilometres an hour. A trip from the northern port of Gdansk to the southern city of Cracow will take just five hours, compared to about nine hours at present.
