Bulgaria to open honorary consulate in Cape Town

Bulgaria will open an honorary consulate in the parliamentary capital city of South Africa, Cape Town, the Cabinet agreed on April 10 2013.

Boris Vassilev, who holds dual Bulgarian and South African citizenship and has lived in Cape Town for 21 years, will be honorary consul.

According to a Cabinet statement, Vassilev is well-acquainted with the local administration, where he worked as an engineer. He is the chairman of the Bulgarian Christian and cultural organisation, “Balkan”.

The opening of the honorary consulate of Bulgaria in Cape Town increases opportunities for the development of political, economic and cultural ties between Bulgaria and South African and improves opportunities for assistance and protection of the interests of Bulgarian citizens and the Bulgarian community, the government in Sofia said.

In 2012, Bulgaria and South Africa celebrated 20 years since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. Bulgaria’s embassy is in South Africa’s executive capital, Pretoria.
