European Commission approves 170M euro in state aid for Bulgarian farmers

The European Commission said on October 2 that it has approved 170 million euro in state aid for Bulgarian farmers, who are facing increased fuel and fertiliser prices due to the Middle East crisis

In a statement, the Commission said that the state aid aims to mitigate the impact of higher prices through direct grants to agricultural producers.

The grants are capped at 50 000 euro per company and contingent on the funding being granted no later than December 31, the EC said.

This is the second time in two years that the Commission has authorised Bulgarian state aid schemes to farmers due to energy crises caused by external factors.

In October 2024, the EC approved 330 million leva, or about 169 million euro, for Bulgarian farmers affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
