Bulgaria’s January – August 2026 road death toll is 311
A total of 311 people died in road accidents in Bulgaria between January 1 and August 31 2026, according to provisional data posted on September 1 by the Interior Ministry.
This is 27 more road deaths than at the same time in 2025, the ministry said.
In the first eight months of 2026, there were 4487 accidents on Bulgaria’s roads in which people died or were seriously injured. Apart from the dead, 5571 people were seriously injured.
In August 2026 alone, there were 710 serious accidents on Bulgaria’s roads, leaving 37 dead and 873 injured.
As The Sofia Globe reported previously, Bulgaria is among five European Union countries on track to meet the target of reducing the annual number of deaths in road accidents by 50 per cent by 2030, but in 2025 had the highest road death rate in the EU, according to preliminary data posted by the European Commission (EC) on March 24.
