New passenger car registrations in Bulgaria in first two months of 2026 down 5.4% y/y

There were 6984 new passenger car registrations in Bulgaria in January to February 2026, a decrease of 5.4 per cent compared with January – February 2025, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, ACEA, said on March 24.

Of the new passenger car registrations in Bulgaria in January – February 2026, a total of 5304 were petrol cars, 1518 diesel, 397 battery-electric, 413 hybrid-electric and 106 plug-in hybrid.

Eight were in the category “other”, which includes fuel-cell electric vehicles, natural gas vehicles, LPG, E85/ethanol, and other fuels.

In February 2026 year-to-date (YTD), new EU car registrations fell by 1.2 per cent compared to the same period last year, easing the challenging start to the year witnessed in January.

The battery-electric car market share in the EU reached 18.8 per cent YTD, highlighting the continued potential for further growth.

Hybrid-electric vehicles lead as the most popular power type choice among buyers, with plug-in hybrids consolidating their position in the market, underlining the importance of a technology-neutral pathway to decarbonisation.

Battery-electric cars accounted for 18.8 per cent of the EU market share in January-February 2026, an increase from 15.2 per cent one year earlier. Hybrid-electric car registrations captured 38.7 per cent of the market, remaining the preferred choice among consumers in the EU.

Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 30.6 per cent, down from 38.7 per cent over the same period in 2025.
