EU foreign policy chief: Death of Ali Khamenei is a defining moment in Iran’s history

The death of Ali Khamenei is a defining moment in Iran’s history, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on X on March 1.

Iran confirmed on February 28 that supreme leader Khamenei had died in US-Israeli strikes, while media reports said that several other senior Iranian officials were dead.

Kallas said: “What comes next is uncertain. But there is now an open path to a different Iran, one that its people may have greater freedom to shape.

“I’m in contact with partners, including those in the region that bear the brunt of Iran’s military actions, to find practical steps for de-escalation,” she said, posting a photograph of officials to whom she had spoken, including G7 foreign ministers and foreign ministers from Middle Eastern countries.

As The Sofia Globe reported earlier, Kallas has convened a special meeting, via video link, of EU foreign ministers on the evening of March 1.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X: “With Khamenei gone, there is renewed hope for the people of Iran. We must ensure that the future is theirs to claim and shape”.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said: “The end of the Ayatollah must signal the end of the age of dictators in Iran. After 47 years, it must be time for freedom”.
