Eurostat: Bulgaria had EU’s second-highest increase in retail trade volume in December 2025

Bulgaria had the second-highest increase in the European Union in retail trade volume in December 2025, at 7.7 per cent, EU statistics agency Eurostat said on February 5.

In first place was Cyprus, 8.2 per cent, and in third, Luxembourg, 6.2 per cent, according to Eurostat.

The largest decreases were in Slovakia (-5.1 per cent), Romania (-2.1 per cent) and Estonia (-1.0 per cent).

On a monthly basis, Bulgaria’s retail trade volume in December 2025 was 1.6 per cent higher than in November.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in the total retail trade volume were recorded in Portugal (-3.1 per cent), Sweden (-1.9 per cent) and Denmark (-1.6 per cent).

The highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+7.0 per cent), Slovakia (+3.1 per cent) and Croatia (+1.8 per cent).

In December 2025, compared with November 2025, the seasonally adjusted retail trade volume decreased by 0.5 per cent in both the euro area and the EU, according to first estimates from Eurostat.

In November 2025, retail trade volume grew by 0.1 per cent in the euro area and by 0.2 per cent in the EU.

In December 2025, compared with December 2024, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 1.3 per cent in the euro area and by 1.7 per cent in the EU.

The annual average level of retail trade volume for the year 2025, compared with 2024, increased by 2.3 per cent in both the euro area and the EU.
