European Union leaders congratulate Student List on victory in Serbia’s parliamentary elections

European Union leaders have congratulated Student List on its victory in Serbia’s October 25 parliamentary elections.

Before results were official, Serbia’s long-standing leader Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat in the elections, which followed two years of student-led large-scale protests against his government on the grounds of corruption and abuse of power.

In a message on X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the people of Serbia had turned out in record numbers to shape their country’s future.

“Congratulations to the Student List on its victory in the parliamentary elections. We stand ready to support reforms on the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and strong democratic institutions, and to work together to advance Serbia’s future in the European Union,” Von der Leyen said.

European Council President António Costa said on X: “We stand ready to support reforms on the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and strong democratic institutions, and to work together to build Serbia’s future in the European Union”.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said: “Encouraging to see the record turnout in Serbia. Grateful to the Members of the European Parliament and all the delegation on the ground observing the election”.

The European Parliament remains committed to supporting Serbia’s reform process as it continues on its European path, Metsola said.
