Initial construction work on Sofia Airport’s Terminal 3 begins

SOF Connect, the operator of Vassil Levski Sofia Airport, and Glavbolgarstroy – Infrastructure Construction have launched preliminary construction work associated with the development of Terminal 3, the airport said in a media statement on October 23.

The work includes the construction of a new Transportation Centre, the reconstruction of the area in front of Terminal 2, and the relocation of existing underground infrastructure – all key elements in preparing for the future terminal.

SOF Connect’s total investment in these activities exceeds seven million euro and forms part of the airport’s long-term development and investment programme, the statement said.

One of the main components of the project is the construction of a new bus Transportation Centre, which will improve the organisation of transport services and passenger movement in the Terminal 2 area. The project provides for a dedicated bus zone with 14 parking bays and an optimised traffic management layout in the area, the airport said.

The second component involves the reconstruction of the area in front of the terminal to improve the surrounding urban environment, accessibility and traffic management. Plans include the construction of an access ramp for wheelchair users and the relocation of the taxi stand to a position directly in front of Terminal 2.

The new layout will ensure a continuous flow of taxis throughout the construction of Terminal 3, while also improving services for arriving and departing passengers.

In parallel, the third component of the project will begin at the end of October. It involves the relocation of existing infrastructure serving Terminal 2 and the Air Traffic Services (ATS) tower, as well as the construction of new underground utility networks.

These networks will serve Terminal 2, the ATS tower and the future Terminal 3, and will include electricity supply, heating, drinking water supply, domestic wastewater and stormwater drainage, telecommunications and a fire suppression system.

Work on the Transportation Centre and the redevelopment of the area in front of Terminal 2 are expected to be completed by the end of March 2027, the airport said.

Construction of the new underground infrastructure will begin at the end of October and is also expected to be completed in March next year, the statement said.
