Caretaker PM: Bulgaria will support any actions that would calm Middle East

Bulgaria would support any actions that would calm the situation in the Middle East, caretaker Prime Minister Andrei Gyurov said on March 19 at the start of a two-day meeting of the European Council.

Gyurov pointed to the need for de-escalation, seeking solutions to stop military actions and calming the tension in the situation of high energy prices and potential migratory pressure, according to a statement by the government information service.

Regarding the conflict in the Middle East, Gyurov pointed out that at the moment neither Nato nor the EU are involved in it.

On March 18, meeting European Council President António Costa, Gyurov said that the EU’s unified approach, in coordination with its transatlantic partners, is the key to protecting the security of European citizens and stability in the region.

The events in the Middle East raise serious concerns about new migratory pressure on the EU, while at the same time creating a risk of terrorist threats, Gyurov said.

He said that preserving maritime security and respecting freedom of navigation are of paramount importance. At the same time, Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, Gyurov said.

In talks with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on March 18, Gyurov and Metsola agreed that what is happening in the Middle East should not divert valuable resources from Ukraine, and the EU reaffirms its unwavering support for the Ukrainian side.

Gyurov and Metsola agreed that the situation in the Middle East requires an even greater need for enhanced coordination between EU member states.

It was also emphasized that the economic stability of the EU requires joint action to limit the negative impact on markets and the investment environment, a Bulgarian government information service statement said.
