Bulgarian and Italian defence ministers sign agreement on use of military facilities at Kabile

Bulgarian Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov and his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto signed on December 23 an agreement between their governments on the joint construction and use of military facilities in the Kabile military region, the Defence Ministry said.

As The Sofia Globe reported at the time, the agreement was approved by the Bulgarian government on August 13.

The signing took place at the 22nd Air Base in Bezmer during a visit to Bulgaria by Crosetto.

The two ministers discussed the development of bilateral co-operation in the field of defence, “which is characterized by intensity, consistency and mutual commitment to the implementation of Nato’s deterrence and defence measures,” the Defence Ministry statement said.

The statement quoted Zapryanov as saying: “We highly appreciate Italy’s active participation in the Nato Multinational Battle Group in Bulgaria and the opportunity to work together in the interest of the security of the Alliance’s member states by contributing to collective defence”.

The two ministers said that the signed agreement marks the beginning of the construction of joint facilities on the territory of the Kabile military region. Additional technical arrangements and annexes are to be developed for its full implementation.

Crosetto is also to visit Italian military personnel from the Nato Multinational Battle Group in Bulgaria at the Novo Selo training ground.
