From November 15, vehicles in Bulgaria must have tyres suitable for winter conditions

From November 15 to March 1, motor vehicles in Bulgaria must by law be fitted with tyres suitable for winter conditions.

According to the law, approved by Parliament in 2016, cars must have tyres designed for winter conditions or that have a tread depth of no less than or equal to four millimetres, the Interior Ministry said.

The Road Traffic Act allows the use of all-season or even summer tyres if they meet the grip requirement, but experts strongly recommend winter tyres for better safety in cold weather.

The traditional Interior Ministry “Winter” campaign, which aims to increase drivers’ attention to preparing their cars for the upcoming winter season, started on November 1.

Until November 20, the control authorities will also monitor the behavior of pedestrians more closely. They will check whether they obey traffic lights, whether they cross in prohibited areas or through safety barriers, and whether they use mobile phones or other devices that distract them while crossing.

In parallel, they will also monitor whether drivers give priority to pedestrians.

The third part of the “Winter” campaign, entitled “Safe Driving in Winter”, will take place from November 21 to 30. It will focus on controlling the technical condition of cars and their lighting systems.
