Poll: Two-thirds of Bulgarians think country should back EU if there are differences with US

Fifty-nine per cent of Bulgarians think that, if there are differences in the positions of the European Union and the United States, Bulgaria should support the EU position.

This is according to a poll by the Alpha Research agency, the results of which were released on March 7.

The opposite view, that “Bulgaria should adhere to the positions of the US, because it is stronger” was supported by just 14 per cent of adult citizens, with 27 per cent undecided.

The only voters where support for the US in its relations with the EU was in the majority were those of pro-Russian minority party Vuzrazhdane, by 39 per cent to 34 per cent.

Voters for all other parties, regardless of the statements of their leaders, held that Bulgaria should be on the side of Europe and contribute to its unity and strength, Alpha Research’s poll found.

The agency said that the gap between positive and negative views of Bulgaria’s membership of Nato was closing slightly, from 40 per cent positive to 28 per cent negative in September 2024 to 39 per cent positive and 30 per cent negative in February 2025.

“Support for Bulgaria’s membership of Nato, which has increased since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, continues to dominate, but there are more doubts about whether this alliance will be able to protect our country in the event of an armed conflict,” Alpha Research said.

From September 2024 to February 2025, there was an increase in support for Bulgaria’s membership of the EU, from 57 per cent to 61 per cent, close to the historic high in previous polls.

Fifteen per cent were against Bulgaria’s EU membership, with 24 per cent undecided.

Alpha Research said that the countries that are making the greatest efforts to ensure that Europe actively defends its positions and leads the process of achieving lasting peace in Ukraine also meet with overwhelming approval – Germany enjoys 85 per cent trust, France 78 per cent, Italy 77 per cent, the United Kingdom 73 per cent.

Fifty-two per cent of adults declared a positive attitude towards the US, and 48 per cent towards Russia.

Alpha Research did the poll from February 20 to 28, using its own funds, and has published the results on its website. The poll was done among 1000 adult citizens from all over Bulgaria. The methodology was a stratified two-stage sample with quotas for the main socio-demographic characteristics. The poll was done through a direct standardised interview with tablets at the homes of the respondents.
