Anniversary of invasion: European Parliament to fly EU, Ukraine flags, EC to visit Kyiv
European Union and Ukrainian flags will be flown at the European Parliament’s three sites from February 23 to 25, marking three years since Russia’s invasion, the European Parliament said.
Russia launched its unprovoked, unjustified and illegal attack against Ukraine on February 24 2022, the European Parliament’s statement said.
Special set-ups of both EU and Ukraine flags will be flown in front of the EP Spaak building in Brussels, the Weiss building in Strasbourg, and the Adenauer building in Luxembourg, from 4pm on February 23 to 9am on February 25.
At 11am on February 25, a Ukrainian flag will be displayed next to the EU flag and the 27 EU member states flags, in the same spots in the three cities.
Also in Brussels, the Station Europe building will be illuminated with the colours of the yellow and blue Ukrainian flag on the evenings of February 23 and 24, from 7pm to 1am.
On February 11 2025, the European Parliament’s leadership issued a statement reiterating their “steadfast solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who continue to demonstrate extraordinary resilience and courage in defending their sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity”.
MEPs are set to adopt a resolution on the EU’s continued and unwavering support for Ukraine during the next plenary session, on March 12. The vote will wrap up a plenary debate held on 11 February.
In a separate statement on February 21, the European Commission (EC) said that EC President Ursula von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners will be in Kyiv on February 24 to express Europe’s unflinching support for Ukraine’s fight for independence and freedom, three years into Russia’s full-scale war.
Over the past three years, the EU has stood firmly by Ukraine’s side, and dedicated every effort to ensure the country is in a position to obtain a just and lasting peace, the EC said.
“The EU has supported Ukraine’s financial stability and contributed to international efforts towards Russian accountability for its crimes.
“It has worked side-by-side with Ukraine on its accession process, to ensure that the country’s future is within the EU. The EU is Ukraine’s largest donor to date, it has trained the country’s soldiers, financed the delivery of weapons and imposed hard-biting sanctions, the EC said.
On February 24, Von der Leyen will meet with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
They will co-chair a College-to-Government meeting to prepare Ukraine’s future as a free, sovereign, and European nation”.
Earlier in the day, the European Commissioners will honour fallen soldiers and those still fighting on the frontlines of Russia’s brutal war of aggression, the EC said.
