Bulgaria’s government extends temporary protection for refugees from war in Ukraine
Bulgaria’s government adopted a decision on February 19 extending the temporary protection of displaced persons from Ukraine on the territory of Bulgaria by one year, effective from March 4 2025.
The Cabinet’s decision is in line with the European Commission’s decision to extend the Temporary Protection Directive, the government information service said.
The Cabinet approved sample registration cards issued by the State Agency for Refugees and set a deadline for re-registration of persons displaced from Ukraine who have been granted temporary protection.
The re-registration process will continue until the end of April.
According to the Bulgarian government’s dedicated portal on Ukrainian refugees, since the February 2022 Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 3 398 551 Ukrainians have entered Bulgaria, of whom 60 864 remain in Bulgaria.
A total of 5961 are accommodated through the state support scheme initiated in 2022 by the Petkov government.
A total of 197 580 have been registered in Bulgaria through the EC’s temporary protection system.
