Bulgaria’s caretaker government consents to opening of an Australian honorary consulate

At a regular meeting on October 30, Bulgaria’s caretaker government gave its consent to an Australian honorary consulate in Sofia with a consular district covering all of Bulgaria, the government information service said.

The caretaker government agreed to a proposal by Australia for the honorary consulate to be headed by Yoana Kehlibarova, the statement said.

The decision is expected to help deepen bilateral relations by stimulating economic and socio-cultural contacts and ties in the fields of education, science and technology, as well as protecting the interests of Australian citizens in Bulgaria, it said.

In the same decision, the caretaker government, responding to a notification from Australia, withdrew its consent for Indiana Trifonova to perform the functions of an honorary consul, the government information service said.

Australia’s ambassador to Bulgaria is Alison Duncan, who is resident in Greece’s capital city Athens.
