Bulgaria’s caretaker government approves signing of security cooperation agreement with Ukraine
At a regular meeting on October 2, Bulgaria’s caretaker cabinet approved the signing of a security cooperation agreement between Bulgaria and Ukraine and the accession of Bulgaria to the Ukraine Compact presented during this year’s Nato Summit in Washington DC, the government information service said.
The Ukraine Compact was approved at a special event after the end of the Nato Summit in July and was joined by 23 member states of the Alliance. The initiative envisages providing political support to Ukraine, as well as coordinating and accelerating efforts to assist the country in the field of security.
“Bulgaria provides political and practical support to Ukraine, which, through its opposition to Russian aggression, contributes directly to the protection of freedom, security and sovereignty of all European member states,” the government statement said.
“In line with this consistent policy and with the aim of joining the Ukraine Compact, Bulgaria will sign a security agreement with Ukraine under which the parties will work on specific bilateral arrangements,” it said.
The statement said that this act would confirm Bulgaria’s continued support and solidarity for the legitimate struggle of the Ukrainian side against Russian aggression, as well as Bulgaria’s desire to continue actively participating in international efforts to assist Ukraine in the short and long term.
